Chapter 20

Spring melted away, and summer passed in Brazil before fading into the cooler climes of autumn. Another expedition in the dense outskirts of the rainforest led to more dead ends in their search for legendary treasure, but introduced them to the trials and tribulations of working in such a demanding location.

Griffin wouldn’t have traded it for the world.

He watched proudly as Aisling grew in confidence and skill, reassured that he had done right by her in moving her job an ocean away.

Elsewhere in the world, things weren’t so bright and happy. He received reports from his cousin Addison of an uprising from the Inquisitors. Their silence had been the calm before the storm, which eventually led to a series of bloody battles across the world. The worst of the murders occurred in France and the United Kingdom. Loved ones found several prominent Magi dead in their homes, slaughtered by violent methods of witch extermination.

And in the case of each murder, a single defining factor connected a majority of the killings—authorities discovered shrines within their homes dedicated to one of the seven demon Princes.

The situation was far from dangerous in Rio, but Aisling worried when a murder occurred near her grandmother’s estate in Ireland.

Krys phoned her from the fiery scene of the crime to relay the news. Inquisitors had stormed the home and hung the three occupants, killing a wealthy employee of the Irish Vault, his wife, and their teenaged son. Setting fire to the home afterward hadn’t concealed the crime committed by them.

Although Ceara rarely owned up to having fears, she admitted them then. Griffin and Ash voluntarily visited and spent the night in the manor, respectfully inhabiting different rooms while under her grandmother’s roof. The next morning, he kissed her goodbye and set out for the early Portal to Spain. They planned to reunite by evening in the city at her flat. This time, he would have Mara with him for the first time in months.

He felt giddy when he emerged from the Portal and eager to enjoy the two weeks with his daughter. He bounced on his feet while waiting for the mechanic to service his plane. Would Aisling and Mara get along? Would they like one another?

Nervous anticipation rolled his stomach into knots until he arrived to find Mara awaiting him at the door. She flew toward him to leap into his arms, and he caught her gladly against him. Their hugs and kisses were interrupted by the subtle clearing of Mercedes’s throat.

“I appreciate you lettin’ us do this, Mercy. I really do. Is she packed?”

“No. I thought you would have a better idea of what would be appropriate, so I left it to you.”

Mercy’s docile and personable behavior set off alarms of caution, but she remained hospitable and even made him a steaming pot of coffee. Herself. That threw Griffin for a loop when she arrived at Mara’s room with a mug. The aroma of a light roasted coffee with a dash of hazelnut put him in a chipper mood to talk.
